For cities as old as Vancouver, it is not uncommon to have an underground infrastructure and piping system where excess rainwater and sewage are combined. This means, in the event of heavy rainfall, which we get plenty of, sewage-mixed stormwater is redirected to receiving waters like rivers and oceans.
The City of Vancouver has a regulatory target to reduce this combined sewer overflow by 2050 and this project is a part of this master plan. When completed, sewer pipes and stormwater pipes will be separated, and as a result, quality of beautiful bodies of water and waterways that surround us will be improved.
Various new green rainwater infrastructure will also be used for trees, plants and better soil management. Overall, it is just a smarter water management system.
