This posting is open to students of all engineering disciplines to coordinate our Co-Op program. Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering students are preferred.

The Complete Utility Co-Op program is a 4-month program where the student gets to perform career-related functions. This program balances classroom theory with hands-on experience. It's a great way to explore the field of our industry while expanding the individuals' skills and resume.

Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, a Co-op Project Coordinator is responsible for the successful coordination of day-to-day functions regarding Complete Utility Contractors' ongoing civil construction activities. Projects vary in complexity, duration, and location. The Co-op Project Coordinator will work with Project Managers, Superintendents, Operations Managers, Health and Safety Department, and HR Manager to plan and ensure that all aspects of project execution and controls related to safety, budget, schedule, and resources are organized on an ongoing basis.

Specifically, this means the Co-op Project Coordinator is responsible for assisting with construction planning and execution, health and safety, environmental compliance, quality, cost/budget, design coordination/management, schedule, reporting (internal and external), and some client management.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactive risk management - forecasting risk and putting mitigation in place
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with the entire company and its vendors, clients, trade partners, and subcontractors.
  • Daily cooperation and communication with Superintendent(s) / Foreman to maximize productivity and efficiency on all projects.
  • Inform the Project Manager of project-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Equipment management is coordinated with Superintendent(s), and Operation Manager.
  • Assist in implementing company policies and procedures
  • Managing the yard and assisting with the transition of the yard spaces
  • Managing and tracking internal resources and external resources and organizing internal inventory
  • Assist with asset management, equipment, trucks, tools, and safety equipment
  • Dispatching and communicating with employees for work site locations
  • Assist with the development of processes and procedures
  • Update and maintain the vendors' list in conjunction with the BD Manager and Ops.
  • Manage emergency dispatch crews

What you will be doing

  • Pick-up from, and drop-off the assigned F550 mini dump truck at, the yard at the Langley office each day, and perform pre-trip inspections and documentation.
  • Use a variety of trailers to haul rollers, skid steers, and materials to and from a variety of jobs-sites, including securing loads.
  • Load and unload equipment and materials by hand and using a variety of equipment/machinery (such as skid steer and forklift).
  • Perform routine maintenance and housekeeping on assigned F550, ensuring cleanliness inside and out, topping up fluids, ensuring the vehicle is fueled etc.
  • Provide prompt feedback to supervisors and management on delays, vehicle damage or failures, and process improvements.
  • Perform a variety of labour tasks to assist site crews as directed, such as shoveling, wheelbarrowing topsoil and spreading out with grass seed placement, and grouting and setting manhole and valve castings.

  • Overseeing the daily activities at work site, including scheduling of workers, delivery of equipment and materials, and progress reporting.

What you will be doing:

  • Assisting the Operations management team in addressing and resolving concerns and problems related to day-to-day construction activities, such as shoring and rigging issues, changes in scope of work from ground conditions and weather.
  • Booking vendors, suppliers, and freight for site requirements as directed.
  • Booking and organizing shoring and equipment rentals as directed.
  • Tracking and updating purchase orders, rental purchase orders, crews, and resources as per changes on site (rentals, returns, purchases, moves).
  • Reviewing, updating, and maintaining rental tracking, and updating rental review documents, issuing to and reviewing them with project teams.
  • Reviewing and reconciling invoices and purchase orders, ensuring they are complete and accurate before providing to Project Managers for their review.
  • Assisting with project scheduling, such as discussing project schedules with the Operations and Projects teams, revising forecasting documentation, and communicating with vendors and suppliers regarding upcoming scopes.
  • Assisting the Operations management team with crew scheduling, such as participating in discussions related to crew forecasting, reviewing current workload and crew load, providing hiring requirements to Human Resources, and assisting with new employee vetting.
  • Coordinating equipment scheduling needs, such as arranging equipment moves and organizing operators.
  • Assisting the Operations management team with managing inventory and completing site inspections, including having discussions with the Foreperson regarding upcoming scope and needs, reviewing inventory with current rental review, crews, and resources; and attending to outstanding rentals and tracking of lost tools and equipment.
  • Tracking equipment hours and organizing equipment maintenance, including updating tools, radios, and small equipment.
  • Assisting the operations management team with dispatching using foreperson reports and reviewing site requirements, and handling changes, additions, and cancellations post dispatch.

 

What we are looking for

 

  • Experience working in an Operations Assistant, Coordinator, or similar role, in a construction environment. Preference for experience in civil construction and in a general contractor setting.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Aptitude for mechanical tools and machinery, understanding how things work intuitively and being able to either fix them or recommend maintenance/repair.
  • Familiarity in working around existing utilities.

  • Installing various types (Ductile Iron, PVC, Concrete, HDPE, Hydro/Tel, etc.) of underground utilities to the local standards and specifications.
  • Ensuring utilities are being installed at correct grade and elevations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Manager will report to the Project Director and work collaboratively with team members. Must have extensive civil construction experience and a demonstrated track record of leading and executing profitable infrastructure projects. The individual will take a lead role on project delivery, providing insight and innovative solutions, and liaising directly with client/owners. This role is responsible for establishing project objectives, procedures, and performance standards to support the completion of construction projects, on budget and on time.

You will oversee project controls for construction projects including overall forecasting, cost management, contingency planning, resulting in achieving profitability of the project. Organize and attend regular meetings and contribute technical direction to the pre-construction process for planning and estimating tasks, and acts as a technical resource for the project team during construction. Manage resources and coordinate project teams. Review, understand and facilitates the execution of project contract, liaising with legal counsel and Department Managers. Lead procurement activities for projects and ensure front-end duties are completed prior to the project start date. Accountable for the timely and accurate submission of progress billings and support for receivables collections. Work with all on-site personnel as required to identify and resolve issues, ensure quality control, and support the overall project schedule and goals. Creates and maintain project schedules. Uphold project safety expectations.

A minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in civil construction of various infrastructure projects such as earthworks, roadbuilding, excavation & shoring, and underground utilities. Proficient with software such as Microsoft Project, Adobe, and all Microsoft Office programs. Valid Driver’s License Required. Post-secondary education with a degree in construction management, civil or structural engineering preferred.

Must possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills, both verbal and written with superior interpersonal, relationship and organizational management skills. Must be approachable and capable of working efficiently with an open-door policy. Possess a demonstrated ability to lead and direct projects, analyze issues, and bring innovative solutions to achieving work plan objectives.
